In my last post I encouraged men and thick women to step into a new world of denim - Skinny Jeans. For men I went into a fair amount of detail as to how to do this. For women, however, I held off because I think it requires a post of its own.
Allow me to contextualize, once again, which kind of women I'm talking about. When I refer to women as "thick", I mean those of you (us) with hips, booty, thighs - all of them, a combo of them, or even just one. In fashion speak, these girls are annoyingly referred to as "plus size" - meaning over a size 8 (usually about 10-14). But I'm not really down with the term "plus size", nor am I down with "curvy" (since when are supermodels like Bar Refaeli curvy?!), so I'll stick to thick if that's alright by you.
I know there is some hesitation among thicker girls to wear skinny jeans and I'm here to put your fears to rest. But in order to do so, I'm going to tell you the same thing I told the fellas. The desire to wear the skinnies must be there. You have to have a certain degree of confidence in your body - which for many women (whether they're a size 2 or a size 16) can be a struggle. You don't have to embrace everything and think you're gorgeous in every way, but you should be aware and okay with the idea that you will be revealing more than you're used to. Ok now let that sink in and take a breath. You good? If the answer is no, don't worry, skinnies will always be there for you when you're ready. If the answer is yes, continue on for tips to your Skinny Jeans Bliss.
1. Dark Wash, Nothing Fancy: This is one that you'll hear time and time again. We all know that darker colors are slimming. They streamline the silhouette, they don't draw attention downward, and creases/bulges/folds are better disguised. To go along with this, stay away from embellishments of any kind: extra stitching, buttons, or studs - any bleaching, designs, or imprints - oh, and please stay absolutely clear of those jeans without back pockets. They will make any butt look inordinately huge (unless that's what you're going for!). Keep it clean, dark, and nondescript. Mihal's fav places to find Dark Wash: Uniqlo, Levi's.
2. It's in the Stretch: There are 2 ways to go about fitting your beautifully thick body into skinny jeans. The first is the stretchy jean. What I love about the stretchy jean is that they're less likely to to stretch out in the wrong way. Meaning, rather than the material losing elasticity and sagging, they will stretch in a spandexy way, staying tight to accentuate your figure. Nothing less cute than a pair of skinny jeans with a saggy butt or knees. Because of the stretchiness in the denim, you won't have to wash it as much, it will wear out less, and it will maintain a nice close fit. Mihal's fav places to find Stretchy Jeans: Urban Outfitters, Zara, Uniqlo (but at Uniqlo make sure you get a size smaller than usual because they do tend to stretch out a bit).
3. It's in the Stiffness: The second method of hugging those curves with the denim is finding the perfect stiff jean. In my opinion these jeans are slightly less comfortable because they kind of corset you in. BUT...the result is great. The quality of the denim is tougher and less forgiving, so in a sense you're shimmying into the shape that the jeans are already providing. These should be washed as little as possible (perhaps stick to dry cleaning if you've got the patience/cash flow for it) because the more you wash them, the softer they become, losing the stiffness which is the reason you bought them in the first place! Mihal's fav places to find Stiff Jeans: Levi's, Rock & Republic (kind of pricey, but can be found discount at Century 21!).
4. Higher Waist Rise: The days of low rise are out, people - especially for us curvier girls. If you like your love handles sticking out, then by all means keep the rise on your jeans under them. But to conceal them and to stop constantly worrying about your butt crack sticking out (not to mention pulling your waistband up and over your belly when you sit down), for goodness sake experiment with a higher waist! Let me clarify that while I love them, I'm not talking about high waisted jeans, the ones that almost touch the ribcage. No, I'm simply referring to jeans with a higher rise - the waist line comes right about to the belly button. They come in both the stretchy and stiff variety, so you can figure out what works best for you. This has made the most difference for me in my relationship with skinny jeans - I hope you'll try them out. Mihal's fav places to find Higher Waist Rise Jeans: Urban Outfitters (the BDG brand called "High Rise Cigarette Jean" specifically!), H&M.
5. Perfect Length: This is a tough one for thick girls because a lot of jeans are made for tall, thin people. If we get a bigger size up to to accommodate our hips, thighs or booty, the jeans become longer and the proportions change. Nothing worse than skinny jeans that bunch excessively at the bottom. Not only does the bunchiness look funny, but it draws too much attention to the wrongness of the pant, which is turn makes the outfit look effed up, which...you guessed it...makes you look like a hot mess when all you're trying to do is wear a damn pair of skinny jeans! Luckily a lot of places these days have a L/R/S (Long/Regular/Short) option. And even if you're not a short person, it means that the legs are shorter in proportion to the waist - so when you go up in width, you're not necessarily going up in length. Mihal's fav places to find Perfect Length Jeans: Urban Outfitters (the BDG brands called "Ankle Jeans" and "Ankle Grazer Jeans"), Levi's, Uniqlo (they hem your jeans free of charge!).
And this concludes my tips to your Skinny Jeans Bliss. Good luck out there, ladies, it's a tough hurdle to conquer, I know. But let me assure you I know plenty of thick women of all ages with all kinds of curves who are wearing them with pride and looking damn fine (yes, even my mom is one of them!). Don't give up if you don't find them right away, the quest for the perfect skinny jean is only second to the quest for the perfect man (or woman, if that's what you're into). Eff the haters, keep on keepin' on, and as always...
Happy Shopping.

The Skinny Jeans Debate (Thick Girls & Men: Listen Up!)
In the last few weeks there has been some major dissension among HuffPo readers regarding the topic of Skinny Jeans. Which body types can and cannot pull them off, when they are appropriate, which types of people they're appropriate on...the argument over who should and shouldn't wear these jeans goes as far as age, sexual orientation, nationality, occupation and even race! It's really intense when you think about it - that a style of denim can cause so much controversy.
Of course, being the fiend for controversy that I am, and being the lover of skinny jeans that I am, I had to jump in.
There seem to be two main arguments when it comes to skinny jeans. One is that thick girls cannot wear them (thick="plus sized", so I'm going to say over a size 8), and the second is that men cannot wear them (unless they're gay). I am here to make a rebuttal on both accounts.
Let's begin with skinny jeans on "thick" girls (the ones with booty, hips and thighs). Before I delve in I'm going to ask you to do something that has probably never been asked of you before: try and separate the disdain that you have for bigger girls in skinny jeans from the disdain that you have for bigger girls in general. Don't get defensive. My guess is that people who are attracted to girls over a size 8 don't have a problem seeing them in skinny jeans. Simply ask yourself, "do I not like the way skinny jeans look on thick girls because the jeans don't look good, or because I'm not interested in seeing curves accentuated in that kind of way?" I think for many, it's the latter - so we automatically jump to the assumption that thicker girls should wear a different kind of jeans that hide their curves.
So, assuming that little exercise had any impact on you at all, and you're now able to take an objective look at thick girls in skinny jeans, let's take a moment to check these women (and their skinny jeans) out in all their glory:
If this doesn't convince you that bigger/thicker/plus size/whatever women can (and should) wear skinny jeans, then clearly you've got something else going on. In my previous post defending skinny women, y'all jumped to the bigger girl's defense, and in somebody else's post declaring the skinny jean universally flattering, you attack the bigger girl for trying to get in on the action. C'mon.
If you're a thick girl and you're interested in wearing skinny jeans but not sure how to approach the situation, that will be my next post, so stay tuned.
Moving onto men. Many people think that skinny jeans can only be worn by men who fit into one or more of the following categories: gays, rockstars, hipsters, ages 16-25, super skinny men, gays, artists, Europeans, or gays. While skinnies do look fabulous on these folks, I assure you the list does not stop there. I'm going to be real with you here though and point out that not all men can venture into this land. First, the interest in skinny jeans has to be there. You have to be comfortable in your body, and know that taking it down a few sizes (which most men out there should probably do regardless) might make you feel more exposed. This is normal - and just like us women - most of the insecurities you have are probably in your head. With that said, while I do support curve-hugging skinnies on a woman - the curves of a male are not quite as sensual as the curves of a female, if you catch my drift. You don't have to be Mick Jagger skinny or have abs like Mario Lopez - but in order for men to pull off the skinny/slim jeans look correctly, you have to think about your body in terms of proportions. Skinny jeans can be worn on most body types - thin, stocky, ripped, or even a little belly/love handle - but if your midsection is super out of proportion with the rest of your body, either you have to compensate with some seriously fresh personal style up top, or skinny jeans are not for you.
Now that that part is out of the way, let's move onto the benefits of skinny jeans on men - starting by defining what I'm talking about. I do not mean this:
But rather something like this:
Skinny jeans for men should sit below the waist, they're slimmer through the hip and thigh, they have a narrow shape in the leg, and they're slightly tapered at the bottom. What can skinny jeans do for you?? Here's how a skinny/slim fitting jean can elevate YOUR look as a man:
- You'll look less like a slob, and for a lot of dudes that can be a very good thing.
- They create a cleaner line with shoes: loafers, high top sneakers, low top sneakers, nice Italian leather shoes. What's that mean? In guy speak, they fit nicer with them - there's less material hanging all over the place and less bunchiness. It's like Legos, they lock into each other better.
- Wearing skinnies gives the illusion that you know what's in, and that you care. This might make your lazy, schleppy guy friends think you're gay...but guess what, the ladies will love it and that's what matters. And if you're a guy who's attracted to guys and not girls, you probably already know the rules, so this article doesn't even apply to you.
- Forget about wearing slacks every time you dress up - skinny jeans are a great alternative for a going out look.
So you see, no need to be gay or a rockstar or European or even under 25 to wear these jeans. Intimidated? You don't have to go skinny immediately! Go to a place like Levi's or H&M that has different gradations of skinniness for you to experiment with. I know you'll be pleased. Bring a girl for moral support, she'll steer you in the right direction (believe me I've helped many a dude along this journey).
The skinnies are here to stay (at least for a few more decades), so everybody (thick girls and men included!) might as well partake in the glory. You know it's a worthy cause when the queen bee of judging (that would be me) is telling you to take a step back from your cynical, negative attitude toward something and embrace the unexpected. When it comes to this cut of denim, please live and let live, open your minds to the glory of The Skinny, and don't forget to look both ways while you strut across the street.

"Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels"
I love Kate Moss. This woman is constantly stirring the pot - and not in a Jon & Kate way or a Madonna in the 90's way - no, Moss causes a ruckus simply by being her and I applaud her for it. I have a few theories as to why she's a magnet for controversy. Firstly, she's super skinny. Anybody who is on the extreme of a relevant issue immediately attracts attention (both good and bad). The weight debate evokes so much sensitivity and political correctness in people (I met several of you in one of my previous posts), and Kate Moss is the perfect target for that upset energy. Secondly, this girl IS rock 'n' roll. She's a party girl who drinks (gasp!), dates rockers (double gasp!) and even does drugs (coughchokegaspgasp!). The public loooooves watching celebs do illegal things. Kate Moss is unapologetically successful, she's been in the business forever and knows how to play the game, she sets trends, she's hardcore, and by golly is she irreverent!
A few weeks back Moss was quoted as living by the motto: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Of course, the media was up in arms. Mothers were irate, repremanding her for corrupting their daughters' minds and encouraging eating disorders and unhealthy habits. Women's magazines chastised Moss for glorifying the idea of the Skinny Woman and encouraging women to diet, and the bloggers went crazy - how could a woman in such a glaring spotlight say such a horrifically damaging statement? Doesn't she know she's a role model??!!
In some ways I'm sympathetic to these arguments. Raising a well-balanced, critical and worldly child must be a daunting task to some folks, and I know that as a parent, you want your child to have positive role models. To my previous post "In Defense Of The Skinny Girl" one woman commented that she felt her influence as a parent couldn't possibly be strong enough to combat the pervasiveness of the mass media. Oy! I mean OY!! RIGHT?!
But let me get back to this quote: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels". It looks horrible at first glance. It promotes eating disorders and diets, it glamorizes skinny women, it tells us we cannot enjoy food and if we do we won't be happy. Or does it? Tell me how that quote is any different from these quotes:
- Tip of the Day: Consuming the right foods at the right time can help you feel good.
- Flat Belly Secrets: Abdominal authority Michele Olson, Ph.D., teaches you tricks to getting a tight tummy.
- Register now for our Jump Start Diet plan and you'll be entered to win a trip for two to St. Lucia!
- Log On & Stay Slim: Noting what you nosh and logging your daily workouts can help you keep off unwanted pounds.
- What Kind of Burger is Right for You? Depending on your figure, says the American Dietetic Association's Angela Ginn-Meadow, R.D., the ideal patty isn't necessarily the ever-virtuous veggie.
- Build Your Best Body Ever: Lose weight, fit into your skinny jeans, and more--all in 6 weeks.
Ok I'll stop there. All of these captions were lifted from reputable and widely circulated women's magazines that I can guarantee at least 90% of all Kate Moss objectors have bought in the last year (or at least looked at online/flipped through/etc). Now tell me, are they not saying the same thing as Kate Moss's controversial mantra? We, as women, are constantly looking for tips to improve ourselves - to be fitter, sexier, stronger, sleep better, know more, have better posture - because when we feel better about ourselves, we are happier beings. I strongly believe these magazine captions and Kate Moss's "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" to be one in the same.
Maybe I'm just sensitive to over-sensitivity, but it seems like the issue will never be left to rest. Maybe we should stop taking conversations about weight and food so personally and allow some kind of objective, rational conversation. In the meantime, lay off my girl Kate! She's just trying to look hot, make money and do the damn thang.

American Apparel is off the CHAIN!!
American Apparel sent me another package today - I'm FLOORED by their generosity. So back my popular demand, here's another collage of my alter ego: AMERICAN APPAREL GIRL (click photo to enlarge).
All of this stuff can be found on their website - just click on NEW STYLES under the Women's category and a lot of it is listed there - high waisted leggings, crop tops (which show off the latest tat quite nicely!), shirts that you can wear as dresses (which is what I think I'm doing with both the black and red one above)...and of course a million more things. Many many thanks to Jon and Jessica over at AA, the love is being majorly 'preciated.

Adventures in AA, TOMS and...ERIN WASSON
It's been a week, yall. Despite finding out that my movie is going to be over a month earlier than planned (read: I'll be out of a job in about 3 weeks), this has actually been a week full of incredible surprises.
It all started a couple of weeks ago when a girlfriend of mine told me to Google myself. When I did, the American Apparel website came up and I found myself quoted on it. They lifted a quote that I wrote in a Huffington Post article about their Circle Scarf (LINK HERE)...and here's the screenshot of it (click to enlarge):
I was effing thrilled. To make matters even more awesome, they ended up sending me two of the scarves gratis - 1 really thick black one, and 1 grey one in this light jersey type material - both SO COZY and cute. So anyway back to this week. I walked into work Monday morning to ANOTHER package that had arrived from AA. I thought, oops, silly them, maybe they sent me the scarves twice. Nope. They sent me an array of other pieces that are hot in the streets right now. They're so outrageous I can't even describe them, so you know me I had to take pics (click to enlarge):
In my alter ego as American Apparel Girl, I'd be wearing things like this gold dress and metallic teal hotpants every day (I'd also be 5'9", 120 lbs, have legs for days and be able to wear heels every day without my back hurting). Alas some of these items may have to be assigned to only the most special of occasions. Wooooord UP to American Apparel for the hookup :).
Ok so that's that part. Then, like I'd previously mentioned, on Thursday I hit up Bergdorf Goodman with my homies Dushane and MJ for the launch of a new luxury line of TOMS Shoes.

Oh, there's just one SUPER IMPORTANT, TOTALLY FUCKING INCREDIBLE THING THAT HAPPENED that I haven't mentioned yet. For those of you who follow the blog or know me in any way shape or form, you know that my idol, my style icon, my PERSON is model and designer Erin Wasson. I've mentioned her in like 75% of my posts, so if you don't know what/who I'm talking about feel free to take a look at the archives - particularly THIS ONE...or THIS ONE. Anyway, The Wasson was there...and I got photo:
Yes, the lighting was horrible, but I was too nervous to stand there and change my settings then take another. So I said thanks and walked away. Oy. White t tucked into dark skinny jeans, a pair of gigantic wedges that I've never seen anywhere and that simple brown hat. I love.
'prece, 'prece, 'prece all around.

5 products that you don't know you need...but you totally do.
Winter is inching closer and closer. Soon women's magazine covers everywhere will be drawing us in with their seasonal tips - tempting us with answers to the cold weather mysteries that have been plaguing us forever. 12 Ways to Combat Hat Hair! Top 5 Products for Those Unsightly Cuticles! Designer Creams vs. Drugstore: Who Wins the Battle? Say No to Paris Hilton: How to Use Bronzer the Right Way! ...I know you know what I mean.
I'm here to relieve you of this winter product madness and provide a whole new category of product must-haves for you: The products that you don't know you need...but you totally do.
1) Palmers Cocoa Butter Lip Balm:
Everybody gets chapped lips at one point or another. Boys, girls, young, old. I've been using this lip stuff for at least 4 years and I've never looked back. You can also use it as a spot-type treatment on your body and face (which I've never done), but on the lips it does just fine. It smells amazing, it's majorly moisturizing and it retails for like 3-4 bucks. If you're feeling super adventurous, Palmers also makes a dark chocolate and peppermint flavored lip butter - I got it in a giftbag at a fashion show a few years back and became highly addicted. Use that one with caution.
2- I'm going to double up on this one because I love the Yes To Carrots brand and I can't choose just one product. Also if you use them one right after the other you will die of luxury and everybody must go through that at least once. "Feel The C" is the first product - it's, what they call, a pampering hand and nail spa.
It's basically this grainy, oily concoction that you rub into your wet hands and fingernails - scrub scrub scrub - wash it off, pat your hands dry, and you're left with the softest baby bottom skin hands you've ever felt. So soft, in fact, that I went and got a manicure last night and the manicurist said I had extremely soft hands. *Blush*. Anyway, then you have to get the tub of heaven, aka "C Through the Dry Spell" Body Butter.
Whatever this body butter touches will guaranteed to still be moisturized by the end of the day (that's my guarantee not theirs). It smells subtle and fresh, it's not sticky or heavy - and even though I use it every day it's lasting a surprisingly long time, a little goes a long way. These products are around 10-13 bucks - a little more than I'd normally like to shell out for a product, but way less than most people spend on equivalent (and less awesome) products. I'm also a major cheapo so I think my perspective is a little skewed.
3. Sombra Pain Relieving Gel. Ok I realize this one is kind of out of left field - but isn't that the point of this? You didn't know you needed it, but you DO.
I know body pain. Pain and I have had a very involved relationship since I was about 11 or 12 - every year I know it more and more intimately, and every year I continue to try and dump it. For those of you out there with chronic body pain, you know it's pretty much impossible to dump. Fortunately I have found a product that provides a nice amount of temporary relief. If you're lucky enough to have somebody in your life who can rub this into your aching muscles, this will be a nice treat when combined with a massage. If you don't, you can absolutely DIY. After a few minutes on the skin and muscles, this gel provides a relaxing heat and cooling sensation all at once. It totally mellows your muscles out - like an internal heating pad. It sells on Amazon.com for about $13 (I'm still always surprised to find things on Amazon other than books) and in random health food stores for a little more.
4) Now I realize that the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge doesn't appear to be a "product" in the same sense as the others, but it is.
I originally bought this magical sponge for the kitchen (as most people do), but as I became more and more aware of its mystical powers I decided to take it elsewhere in the home and see what it was capable of. The most pleasant discovery that I made is that it's really good at cleaning white shoes. Why just today I wore my brand new white Dr. Marten boots out on the town, and of course picked up a few scuffs along the way. I got home, cut off a piece of the sponge with regular scissors, dampened it a little, and magically wiped the scuffs away. For you sneakerheads who insist on keeping those kicks immaculate, and for you rich folk with summer homes in the Hamptons who must wear white loafers and boat shoes (but only before Labor Day of COURSE) - this product is for you.
5. I'm going to do a complete 180 here and make this last product an edible one - everybody's favorite condiment (or at least it should be!) - Ketchup. I'm going to fill you in on a little piece of disgustingness here: most well-known ketchup brands include a completely unnecessary, completely bad for you ingredient that not only can our bodies NOT metabolize, but is packed with calories and actually shuts off our body's natural appetite control so we eat more...and gain more. The culprit: high fructose corn syrup. It's super bad for you, and ketchup is awesome and goes with practically everything!! So why not do a little good for yourself and stop by Trader Joes or Whole Foods or any other health food store and pick up a bottle of HFCS-free ketchup?! I think we could all do with a little more health and a little less fatass-ness.
There you go.
Go forth and buy...because believe me, you need these things.

Use that one with caution.2- I'm going to double up on this one because I love the Yes To Carrots brand and I can't choose just one product. Also if you use them one right after the other you will die of luxury and everybody must go through that at least once. "Feel The C" is the first product - it's, what they call, a pampering hand and nail spa.

iViva Aira Cordones!
My gifted pair of TOMS Shoes have arrived - my PR sister Melissa hooked me UP.
The Aira Cordones, ladies and gents:
I was thrilled to see them sitting on my desk when I walked into work this morning, and I'm cursing the rain because I'd love to strap these babies on and wear them home. Alas, I'll have to wait for sunny skies. I put the laces in and they look super cute - it's kind of a 50's vibe that will def have to be paired with my ankle length skinnies.
And you best believe I'll be wearing these suckers later on this month for the TOMS Shoes exclusive collection launch at Bergdorf Goodman...you can def expect a follow up.
Holler @ TOMS, holler @ Mel...
